we are new to the area and are looking for a dog-friendly beach. are there any in the area? thanks!
Just wanted to say we appreciate dog friendly establishments…those who participate..THANK YOU!
I cannot believe Savannah has only one pathetic dog park. Why? Is anybody trying to change that?
The Sentient Bean (13 E Park Avenue) Across from Forsyth PArk is very dog friendly. Water bowls near both front and back outside tables.
Pinkies allows dogs as well
So is there a dog friendly area on the beach?
I wish to relocate to savannah, from delray beach, florida… i have 2 dogs and 5 cats (yes… you heard me correctly… lol) My dogs are both friendly and well behaved, and all of my animals are indoor-outdoor… fully house trained, non-destructive, lovable and autonomous… but, i need to find a rental that will accomodate them… one with indoor-outdoor/fenced in yard access for the dogs… just to complicate matters… i’d like to live near the downtown area (from “historic downtown”… to the big park Forsyth?… to the dog park… anywhere in between)… and pay relatively cheap rent!… I don’t mind a little apartment with a small yard… that would be fine… anyone have any ideas?… leads?… houses/apartments/basement apartments, etc. for rent?… thank you, for any response and help that you can offer… we look forward to seeing you soon!
There is no dog friendly beach in Savannah, there is on Hilton Head and Brunswick. The YMCA on Tybee Island has a small fenced area out side for dogs, but there are no trees or bushes. Unfortunately, Savannah is not very dog friendly when it comes to “off the leash” locations.
I know the beaches in Hilton Head, SC allow dogs-lots of dogs (on and off leash there).
tybee dog park is located in memorial park,
conveniently located on tybee’s main drag.
the park is a happing place for local folks after work and on the weekend, as well.
it is chatham county’s only municipal off leash facility
and it is there because of dedicated volunteers who raised the money and built it themselves (with the city’s permission).
at 130′ X 80′, it is big enough for a pack of happy dogz & their people to spread out and have fun.
so come on out sometime and see it for yourself.
The Holiday Inn in Hilton Head is Pet friendly. There is a high pet fee then an additional $10 a night. The beach is beautiful and there are a lot of dogs.
There is no dog friendly beach in Savannah, but about an hour and a half south at Jekyll Island you can enjoy miles of dog friendly beaches. There are many dog friendly hotels there as well. If you go I highly recommend going down the dock on the river side of the island. At the end there is a little place called the Raw Bar. Very pet friendly, live music outside on the weekends, and great food. Not to mention the ambiance.
Tybee is looking at opening up all or part of the beach to dogs again. If you support it, make sure you let people know and post messages on Savannah boards. I don’t know who supported banning dogs from the beach in the beginning, but wouldn’t it be nice to be able to take your dogs to tybee?
Hi, this is Brigette from Brigettes Gifts on River Street (formerly pirates booty) All of our employees are animal lovers and loves to see animals brought in!

That is not accurate actually For Pulaski is a little known secret hideaway for dogs! You can absolutely take your dog to the beach and it is free!
I am relocating to Savannah from Portland Maine with my two lovable, sweet medium dogs. I was there last week looking for apartments and scoping out the dog scene. I was impressed that so many apartments allow dogs and that there are many dogs around town, but I was appalled at how there is no leash free space for dogs to run and play. The Starland Dog Park seems a good effort, but it’s nowhere I can walk with my dog–it’s a small fenced pit with one lonely tree. Is there anywhere in the area where we can hike over rocks, let the dogs run in and out of woods, jump in some water, smell and chase small rodents.
Thanks for the postings about Hilton Head. I went to Tybee and was so disappointed about their pet policy. How can I help and who can I write to help bring dogs back there?
In Portland there are many, many great places to explore outdoors where a responsible dog owner can let her dogs run happily.
I’m looking forward to moving and hopefully finding some good walks within the Savannah area. Any tips appreciated. Thanks!
The people that run the dog park are a bunch of power hungry assholes. If you like how Stalin ran Russia you will love the way these people run their dog park.
Hi everyone!!!
Wanted to let everyone know about our company Travels with Pet, soon to be published on the web. We are a full service travel agency for pet travelers but will also be starting pet friendly walking tours of the city. We are hoping to work with the dog park on this and get with businesses who would welcome our 4-legged tourist. On July 19, 2008 we will be doing a test run on 4 of our 6 tours that will be offered. If anyone would like to join in that day it will be free and we would love to have you.

I just wanted to let everyone know about Tailsspin, its a petshop 1 block North from Forsyth on Whitaker. The owners are great & the prices are totally reasonable. Give your money to a local shop, not Petsmart!
FYI, the Savannah Dog Park downtown is not city owned, and only has maintenance done 4 hours a week with part time help. Even the wood chips there were a donation. In addition, this is supposed to only be for paying members of the dogpark, but they look the other way when non-members come in. Also, the owners are far from greedy. They lose money on the dogpark with bills like rent, and maintenance, with the measley memberships that come in to support the rest of the people that come in and don’t pull their own weight. If anything we should be more grateful to have a place there at all, and non-members don’t have a right to say anything! Legally, this is a privately-owned park. Please be thoughtful. My boston, Shelby, loves running around Forythe, but it’s not the same as running around off the leash with other dogs. I’m happy that she even has a dogpark to run around in. How about some gratitude for a change?
My husband and I will be relocating to Savannah very soon w/ 2 beagles. In KY, where we currently are, there is a Top 10 U.S. dog park. I hate to think that our little girls will have no where to run and interact with other dogs.
Hopefully, this dog park is the start of something great. However, is it true you have to pay to use the park?????? That is unheard of here!
Tailsspin Pet Shop is great. They went out of their way to order a special raw dog food for our Pug. Thanks again guys.
I signed the petition!! I live in Fleming but will be relocating to the SAV come may or june after I get back from Hutto TX. I’m going in January to train as a professional dog trainer at Triple Crown Academy! I have big plans for a dog related biz that I’d love to open up downtown ASAP after I get back & will need the support of the Savannah & surrounding area dog owners & maybe looking for investors as well!!
Savannah really does need to be more pooch friendly
Try to make friends with some one that has a boat. Savannah has Little Tybee and Wassau Island that are both uninhabited and easily accessible by boat. The beaches are clean open and if you make friends with a local that knows the water they can take you to beaches that are so secluded you won’t see a single person or dog unless they came with you. If making friends that have a boat doesn’t work for you go to Bull River Marine on the on your way to Tybee it’s on the Left right before the Bull River bridge. They rent boats and will let you take them to Little Tybee its well worth it. The Savannah area is a great place to explore with your dog I wish I still lived their. Have fun I hope this makes at least one dog happier.
